Arts & Culture Welcome Refugees

The Art Gallery of Peterborough is participating in The Arts and Culture Welcome Refugees initiative. The initiative is jointly funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and Sun Life Financial. Through this, the Art Gallery of Peterborough is proud to offer our regular educational programs free to new refugees and refugee claimants plus additional opportunities.

Art instructors will lead adults and teens working together through a series of mixed media art projects reflecting identity and place. Families are welcome to join these relaxed art explorations.



Introduction to Animation with Daniel Crawford
Tuesdays: October 4 to 25, 7 – 9 pm. Value: $170
Combine drawing, sculpture, lighting, sound, and movement to bring stories to life. Short lectures, demos and screenings will inspire and lead students through the full creative process including storyboarding, camera setup and shooting, lighting, sound design, set building and more.

Expressive Watercolour on Canvas with Laura Madera
Thursdays: October 6 to 27, 7 – 9 pm. Value: $200
Learn how to set colour and light free. In this four-week course, students will work with the particular qualities of watercolour on canvas to create evocative images of landscape. Using additive and subtractive techniques, build up successful compositions while breaking every rule and assumption about the medium. This is an excellent course for both the seasoned watercolourist and beginner.



River Voice: Multimedia Explorations with Patrick Moore
Sunday October 16 and/or October 23, 1 – 4 pm. Value: $100 per workshop
Using a folded book form, this workshop will explore the idea of the river with writing and a variety of art making techniques.

Acrylic Mediums and Painting Techniques with Victoria Wallace
Sunday November 13, 1 – 4 pm. Value: $100
Working with acrylic paints and mediums on Plexiglass create transparent acrylic paintings.

Sunday November 20, 1 – 4 pm. Value: $100
Make large-scale acrylic image transfer portraits on canvas. Colour washes complete the process. Participants are to provide a black and white photograph of the portrait subject for enlarging in advance of the class.

Be inspired at the AGP! Meet up with your artist friends and develop your creative powers. Each session includes exhibition tours and hands-on workshops in mixed media, painting, collage and more!

PA Day Programs – Ages 6 to 12
October 28, November 25, 1 – 4 pm. Value: $20 per class
Spend your PA day afternoon getting creative in the AGP Studio and checking out our exhibitions.

Family Days – always drop in & free!
Make art in the AGP Studio and go on an exhibition tour. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Family Sundays – October 2, November 6, December 4. Drop in from 1 – 4 pm.
Snofest Family Day – January 8, 2017. Drop in from 1 – 4 pm.

Art for Teens Sunday Workshops – Animation with Daniel Crawford
Ages 11 and up, 1 – 4 pm. Value: $35 per workshop

In this series of workshops, participants will develop an understanding of animation techniques. The class will draw inspiration from the history of animation and contemporary stop-motion artists. Demonstrations lead students through the animation process, including camera set up and shooting, character and story creation, set building and more. Take one class or all three!

September 25 – Living Drawing
Draw, erase, and re-draw, and bring your drawing to life through animation.

October 30 – Paper Cut Animation
Develop a narrative through storyboarding, and turn it into a short animation film.

November 27 – Stop-motion
Through settings and characters, develop visual language through demonstrated camera techniques and produce a 3D stop-motion animation.
