From the Collection: Anne Meredith Barry

February 20, 2026

It’s been a minute since we’ve shared a collection feature, so today we’re highlighting the work of Anne Meredith Barry from the AGP Permanent Collection.

Anne Meredith Barry (1932-2003) was born and received her formal education in Toronto, Ontario. Drawn to the landscape, Barry travelled across Canada seeking inspiration. In 1971 an artist residency brought her to Conception Bay, Newfoundland. Captivated by the province’s rugged beauty, she returned regularly until 1986, when she and her husband permanently relocated to the east coast.

“Here, I live surrounded by an environment which is characterized by constant change… turbulent coastal weather, four dramatically different seasons, and the endless rhythmic migration of icebergs, whales, seabirds and sea creatures. Behind my studio the high cliffs, freshwater ponds and evergreen forests are home to the land-based animals and birds. My neighbours and I inhabit the space between these worlds, aware of and affected by both.” – Anne Meredith Barry

Over the course of her career, Barry received many accolades. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in 1995, received an honorary doctorate from the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1998, and was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in January 2003 for her support of the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador.

See this work on your next visit! It is currently on view in the exhibition, Source Material: works from the Permanent Collection, until March 29, 2026.
