From the Collection: Oscar Schlienger

Today we’re sharing this snowy scene by Oscar Schlienger from the AGP Permanent Collection:

Oscar Schlienger (1905-1991) was born in Basel, Switzerland and immigrated to Canada in 1930. Initially settling in Montréal, Schlienger eventually made his way to Toronto where he lived and worked until c.1947. During his time in Toronto, Schlienger made a living as an art instructor and, in part, by producing editorial cartoons about WWII for the Globe and Mail.

After the war, Schlienger and his wife relocated to Peterborough where he continued his passion for teaching as an instructor at Fleming College (Peterborough), the Schnieder School of Fine Arts (Hastings County), the Haliburton School of Fine Arts, and Peterborough Collegiate (PCVS). Oscar Schlienger was an associate of the Group of Seven and would often paint with them.
