About the AGP

Since 1974, the Art Gallery of Peterborough (AGP) has showcased extraordinary artwork produced by artists from within our community and beyond. The gallery offers enriching educational experiences for all ages and has built a strong permanent collection to reflect the vibrancy of our community, while keeping pace with emerging currents in the practice of contemporary art.

Our Peterborough community is changing and growing and so are we. If you are an art lover and enthusiastic about supporting your regional gallery, we want to hear from you!

The Art Gallery of Peterborough is located on the Otonabee River in the heart of Michi Saagiig Anishinaabe territory covered by the Williams Treaty. We honour this location by offering exhibition and education programs that welcome everyone to participate in celebrating art, art-making, and the diversity of our community.

Help ensure the Art Gallery of Peterborough offers programs that speak to your friends and neighbours! If you want to have impact on the future of culture in your City, then apply to join our Board of Directors or one of our committees.

Time Commitment

Board of Directors

Board meetings are scheduled for 2 hours, with an hour required in advance to review provided meeting documents. Additional hours could also include attendance at gallery events and openings. The Board meets monthly, with a summer break (10 to 11 board meetings per year in addition to the AGM and required orientation sessions). Directors of the Board are elected by the Membership at an AGM, typically held in June, for a three-year term and may be elected for up to two consecutive terms.

Board members are required to sit on at least one committee at an additional 2 to 3 hours per month, depending on the committee. The Executive Committee is composed of the President, Vice President, Past President, Treasurer, and Secretary. In addition to the Executive Committee, current standing committees of the Board include:

  • Governance
  • Finance
  • Fundraising & Development
  • Acquisitions
  • Advisory Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity
  • an AGP Board member is also appointed to the City of Peterborough’s Art & Culture Advisory Committee.

Fundraising & Development Committee

Help strengthen the future of the Art Gallery of Peterborough by supporting the initiatives that sustain and grow our programs. Members of the Fundraising & Development Committee play an active role in shaping sponsorship opportunities, expanding the Gallery’s membership base, contributing to fundraising campaigns and community and business partnerships.

The Fundraising and Development Committee typically meets monthly (2-hour meeting with an hour required in advance to review provided meeting documents).  Additional hours could also include attendance at gallery events and openings.

Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours a month preparing for and attending monthly meetings. As a member of this committee, you will have a front row seat at our fundraising and special events with opportunities to network with our sponsors, donors, and patrons.

Acquisitions Committee

The Acquisitions Committee works closely with the Gallery’s Curator to review and discuss artworks proposed for acquisition, and makes formal recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Through these discussions, members gain insight into the AGP’s collection, its history, and the principles that guide how public art collections are built and cared for. Topics often include collections management practices, copyright, tax receipting, and Canadian Cultural Property regulations. Members of the committee may also contribute to the review and development of policies related to acquisitions and collection management for consideration by the Board.

The Art Gallery of Peterborough is a collecting institution with Category A Designation from Canadian Heritage, recognizing the Gallery’s ability to care for works of outstanding cultural significance.

Meetings are scheduled as needed and typically occur only a few times annually. These infrequent 3-hour meetings require an additional 1-2 hours in advance to review meeting materials. Membership is open to all, regardless of formal training in the visual arts.
