“Art is long. Life is short. A picture can become for us a highway between a particular thing and a universal feeling.” ― Lawren Harris

Today we’re sharing the work of David Blackwood from the AGP #PermanentCollection.

David Blackwood (1941-2022) was best known for his visual storytelling, reflecting his own lived experience and the legends, superstitions, and landscape of Newfoundland. Blackwood was born in 1941 in the outport community of Wesleyville, Nfld. into a family with a long-standing nautical history. Although he maintained a primary residence and studio in Port Hope, ON, from 1973 until his death in 2022, his attachment in his subject matter was to his Newfoundland roots.

A prodigy in printmaking, Blackwood was recognized for his artistic skill early on when, at twenty-three, one of his etchings was purchased by the National Gallery of Canada. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with over 90 solo shows and two major retrospective exhibitions. Blackwood was awarded the Order of Canada in 1993 and was awarded the Order of Ontario in 2003.

His work is found in major public galleries and corporate art collections throughout Canada and internationally, including The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The Art Gallery of Peterborough is home to two of his works, including “September 3rd: Uncle Dan Sturge Home from the Labrador.”
