About
The Art Gallery of Peterborough (AGP) was established in 1974 and opened the doors to its current facility in 1979 on the shore of Little Lake, along the Otonabee River. It is a non-profit public art gallery dedicated to exhibiting and collecting visual works of art. From its inception, the gallery established a primary goal to focus on celebrating Canadian culture, presenting contemporary visual art by artists working in the Peterborough-Kawarthas region and across the nation.
The AGP has committed to work actively with the First Nation communities of this region, to stand with them as they steward their land and culture. We honour the river named in Anishinaabemowin as the Otonabee, originally known for its rapids. As it translates into “the river that beats like a heart” so to do we strive to keep our culture alive through active discourse and engagement.
The AGP’s artistic vision defines a commitment to:
- Celebrate excellence in artistic exploration and fostering new expression in the visual arts.
- Encourage interaction and the exchange of ideas across a range of demographics, local and beyond.
- Motivate research, communication and critical discourse.
- Respond to our evolving community with artist talks, community panels and opportunities for engagement.
- Build relationships with special interest groups and encouraging a diverse volunteer base.
- Engage local and national artists, bringing forward Canadian artists into the global discourse on visual art.
