The Art Gallery of Peterborough is a non-profit public gallery and gathering place that engages the community and promotes the arts as a cornerstone of creativity and development.
AGP Program Assistants are responsible for assisting with preparation, delivery, and general support of AGP programming including educational tours, workshops, and studio programs, exhibition openings, and artist talks as directed by the Curator, Education Programming Coordinator, Art Educators, and Artist Instructors. AGP Program Assistants will also support AGP special events and outreach programming and may occasionally lead small groups of program participants and volunteers in various planned activities.
AGP Programming Assistants must be available to work a variety of work schedules (shifts are occasional, never exceeding 24 hours/week), with a focus on evenings and weekends, with occasional mornings and afternoons, based on class schedules and staff availability.
Responsibilities
- Support the Curator, Education Programming Coordinator, Art Educators, Artist Instructors, and/or the Communications and Volunteer Coordinator in the preparation and delivery of AGP programming. Programs may include but are not limited to: Children’s Camps, Saturday Art Club, Birthday Parties, School Programs, Exhibition Tours, Adult Workshops, Family Sunday, as well as special and outreach events.
- Provide support to program participants (children, youth, adults, and community groups) by acting as a leader and role model for all by fostering a safe, creative, and positive learning environment.
- Ensure that materials, equipment, and studio space remain organized, cleaned, and in good condition by performing regular cleaning, organizing, and monitoring.
- Prioritize the well-being and safety of participants and volunteers during each program by monitoring situations for potential health and safety risks and taking proactive actions to mitigate and address such risks, being sure to notify the Education Programming Coordinator and Art Educators of any potential areas of concern.
- Act as an ambassador for AGP programs and support the safety of exhibited artworks.
- Help resolve problems and conflicts among participants effectively as they arise.
- Report all incidents promptly and thoroughly to the Curator, Education Programming Coordinator, Art Educators, and/or other permanent AGP staff.
- Act responsibly and demonstrate strong organizational skills in preparation for and during scheduled programs.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in a studio art setting. Candidates must possess a demonstrated interest in visual arts with some knowledge of basic studio art practices, as well as some experience in customer service and support of educational programming (i.e., teaching assistant, camp counsellor, etc.).
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for the arts and/or arts education. Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills, along with confidence and sensitivity working with children, adolescents, and adults are essential. Experience leading or working with groups and individuals is an asset. Other gallery experience is also considered an asset but is not required.
As a condition of hire, candidates must provide a criminal record clearance with vulnerable sector check prior to the start of employment (if aged 18 or over). Standard First Aid and Level “C” CPR training; AED Certificate are considered an asset.
