Alice Teichert
Reciprocity
July 8, 2023 - October 29, 2023
Alice Teichert’s paintings are known for their holographic depth and unique luminosity, for their visual poetry and multi-faceted proximity to music. Reciprocity is a non-linear survey exhibition spanning four decades of practice in which Teichert uses layered pigmented glaze, line, and light to prod the edges of legibility and open new realms of dialogue.
Combining elements from notes, drawing and writing, and musical traditions with vibrating colour, glowing light, and vast depths of translucency, Teichert’s works are a meditation on interpretation. Much of the language used to describe understanding is rooted in observation. What is filtered through the eye becomes chemical and electrical information in the brain, a pulsating symphony of data. It is a ghostly and visceral thing.
“Every day is a new reading space.“
Alice Teichert
Reciprocity is an exchange with mutual benefit, like an illuminating dialogue; a resonance; an amplification. Here, Reciprocity culminates in Mobile Memory, a new sculptural installation utilizing the format of the book and its double page which echoes throughout her practice. Challenging the possibility of the linear experience, pages created with layered transparent acrylic and translucent glaze separate and refuse to be read in narrative and instead offer a complex topography for exploration and in-depth inquiry.
