Laurie De Camillis | Four Seasons
April 12, 2025 – June 22, 2025
Out in the open air, through the seasons and across the landscape, Laurie De Camillis renders what she sees in oil painted brushstrokes. With birch panel and palette in hand, she sets up an ad hoc studio amid the trees and water, land and sky, and creates each artwork reflecting the colours and textures as nature composed them. Each of De Camillis’ brushstrokes are necessary and final. The works are complete once they leave their place of origin. Once back at her studio, no revisions or refinements are made. These are a collection of scenes, documentations of being there and seeing that. The light shifts and the wind blows; there is no stillness here, a vulnerability to the elements. This is life.
“I share my short time with trees, hills, grasses, sky, and all the living things; with all that is around me and without which I would not exist. I sit and paint realizing my life is also just a moment squeezed between the light years passed and the light years ahead I will never see. We are immersed in a web of all things within a moment of time, a glimpse.” – Laurie De Camillis, 2025

After graduating with honours from the Vancouver School of Art, Laurie De Camillis lectured at the school now known as Emily Carr University and went on to teach at the Banff Centre and for the Federation of Canadian Artists. She participated in several museum exhibitions and has shown widely in Canada and Internationally both in group and solo exhibitions. Laurie currently lives and works in Toronto and is a founding member of the Canadian Art Collective.
