Today we’re spotlighting the work of Jim Dine from the AGP #PermanentCollection! Taking inspiration from his piece “8 Hearts / Look,” here are eight fun facts about the artist:

❤️ The heart is a recurring motif in his work. He uses the ubiquitous shape to experiment with texture and colour.

🧡 For the artist the heart is more than a symbol, it is a continuous self-portrait. His emotional connection to the shape stems from a childhood valentine!

💛 He was an important part of the performance-based Happenings movement with Swedish American artist Claes Oldenburg and Amercian artist Allan Kaprow. Happenings were live performances that relied heavily on audience participation that often blended visual art, poetry, and dance.

💚 Dine has worked across a variety of mediums including printmaking, photography, sculpture, drawing, performance, painting, and even poetry!

🩵 His work sits outside the standard categories used to define artistic movements, but is considered part of Pop Art, Neo-Dada, and Neo-expressionism.

🖤 Since 1960 his work has been shown in over 300 solo exhibitions.

🩶 Dine focuses on personal touches and evidence of the human hand in his printmaking practice to counter the mechanical nature of the medium.

🌈 His work is held in many collections all over the world including the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Centres Georges Pompidou (Paris, France), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), and the Art Gallery of Peterborough!

Big thanks to Anna, our Summer Curatorial & Public Engagement Assistant, for pulling this collection spotlight together! ❤️🧡💛💚🩵🖤🩶 “8 Hearts / Look,” is on display at the AGP until October 4, 2026. Check it out on your next visit.
