Curatorial and Public Programs Assistant (YCW):

Duration: 13 weeks, June 3 – August 30, 2024

35 hours per week, $17.85/hr

2024 marks the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s 50th anniversary year. We have several special projects and programs planned to engage the whole of our community, animate our rich history, and propel us into the future. The Curatorial and Public Programs Assistant will be involved in many of those projects including onsite exhibitions, archival research, an oral history project, a digital exhibition, and special events.

The AGP was founded by a group of dedicated volunteers who saw the need for a regional gallery in Peterborough in the mid 1970’s. The stories of our founding members and volunteers are crucial to the history of our organization. We want to share those stories with our public. The Curatorial and Public Programs Assistant would support an oral history project that documents the stories of our earliest members. The successful applicant will assist with research and information gathering, scheduling interviews, and documenting each story.

Our ideal candidate will have a background in contemporary art and an interest in pursuing a career in the field and will have prior experience volunteering or working in a gallery setting. They will be in their second or third year of a University degree in an arts or arts related program. As this work plan centres around three main tasks – handling, research, and public engagement – the ideal candidate will demonstrate experience and interest in each area. Knowledge of studio or curatorial practice, art history or arts administration would be an advantage. Research and critical thinking skills from a related field of study will also be considered an asset (arts education, history, Canadian studies, Indigenous studies, cultural studies, and literature). This position requires working with artists, the public and volunteers. Strong interpersonal skills and experience dealing with the public in Visitor Services and group dynamics in a courteous and effective manner is essential. The successful candidate will have organizational and problem-solving skills and be computer literate.

Education Assistant (YCW):

Duration: 13 weeks, June 3 – August 30, 2024

35 hours per week, $17.85/hr

The Education Assistant’s role will primarily be to assist with the development and delivery of education programs, both in person and online.  The AGP is a prime environment in which to gain experience with art education for all ages. The role of the Education Assistant is to ensure the quality of our summer education programming and to assist in the development of future programs. The impact of the Education Assistant goes well beyond the duration of the contract. An essential part of the AGP team, the Education Assistant will work closely with the Curator and the Education Programming Coordinator.

The Education Assistant acts as a primary frontline contact person for our annual seven weeks of Summer Art Camps for children ages 4 to 12. This includes registration, processing payments, and maintaining class lists and up-to-date Health Forms for all participants. Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with the preparation, delivery, and development of education programs, overseeing check-in and check-outs of child registrants and volunteers, assisting with the supervision of youth volunteers, scheduling lunch breaks for volunteers and educators, overseeing supervision for outdoor play, and monitoring the safety of all participants. Additionally, they will serve as a liaison between Instructors, Youth Volunteers, and the Education Programming Coordinator. The Education Assistant will be able to lead a class of students, aged 4 to 12, and be prepared to take on instructing duties when required. In addition to summer camp programming, the Education Assistant will also assist in the development and delivery of public education programs, such as outreach and engagement, school programs, exhibition tours, digital education content, and future public educational programs that focus on providing access to art that inspire and challenge our audience.

Our ideal candidate will have proven organizational and leadership skills in arts education and volunteer management. They must be able to work independently with minimal supervision; coordinate several tasks at one time; and must be a team player committed to quality customer service.
