AGP Art Educator (Temporary, up to 1 year)

Job Details:

The Art Gallery of Peterborough is a non-profit public gallery and gathering place that engages the community and promotes the arts as a cornerstone of creativity and development.

AGP Art Educators are responsible for delivering educational programming for the gallery, studio, and outreach programs, as directed by the Curator and Education Programming Coordinator. AGP Art Educators are responsible for ensuring a safe, creative, and positive learning environment for program participants of all age groups and diverse communities. Working with the Education Programming Coordinator, AGP Art Educators will develop programs that strongly relate to contemporary and art historical movements, themes, and techniques, based on the schedule of education programming.

The AGP Art Educator must be available to work a variety of work schedules (max. 24 hours/week), with a focus on evenings and weekends, with occasional mornings and afternoons, based on class schedules and staff availability.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee the educational and interpretive activities for all participating children, youth, adult, and community group programs. Programs may include but are not limited to: children’s camps, Saturday Art Club, birthday parties, school programs, exhibition tours, adult workshops, Family Sunday, and other outreach programming as needed.
  • Develop creative arts and educational programming for children, youth, adults, and diverse community groups, in consultation with the Curator and Education Programming Coordinator.
  • Submit all activity plans and outlines for assigned programs, as well as all required administrative documents and material lists in accordance with gallery deadlines.
  • Interpret and incorporate contemporary and art historical movements, themes, and techniques into art activities in an innovative and interesting manner, incorporating curriculum links as required. Generate ideas and motivate program participants through engaging art discussions and activities.
  • Work with the Education Programming Coordinator to provide direction and supervision to studio assistants, co-op students, interns, summer students, and volunteers while ensuring all programming needs and plans have been clearly and effectively communicated and ensuring adequate preparations have been made for each program.
  • Act as a leader and role model for all participants, assistants, and volunteers by fostering a safe, creative, and positive learning environment.
  • Ensure that materials and the studio space remain clean, sanitized, and tidy by participating and directing assistants and volunteers in regularly scheduled cleaning and sanitation of the studio space and materials. Ensure materials and supplies are used safely and cleaned properly by program participants, assistants, and volunteers.
  • Prioritize the well-being and safety of program participants, assistants, and volunteers during each program by evaluating situations for potential health and safety risks and taking proactive actions to mitigate and address such risks.
  • Be adaptive and responsive, making quick informed decisions in the best interest of participants and modifying programs as needed to meet individual needs.
  • Resolve problems and conflicts among participants effectively as they arise.
  • Report all incidents promptly and thoroughly to the Education Programming Coordinator.
  • As needed, and with the support of the Education Programming Coordinator, meet with the parents and/or caregivers of program participants to relay information about the program, the participant’s engagement, and behaviour and answer any questions or concerns they may have.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills in preparation for and during scheduled education programs.

 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in developing and delivering educational programming for all ages and diverse community groups, with special consideration for children ages 4-12. Candidates must have the knowledge and experience typically associated with a completed Bachelor of Education and/or a 4-year post-secondary degree in fine arts with a minimum of 1-2 years previous on-the-job teaching experience.

Candidates will demonstrate a strong visual arts background and good working knowledge of contemporary and historical Canadian Art, including Inuit and First Nations. Candidates must have experience developing and leading arts-based programming. The candidate will demonstrate a passion for the arts and arts education. Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills, along with confidence and sensitivity working with children, adolescents, and adults are essential. Experience working with groups and individuals with disabilities is an asset.

As a condition of hire, candidates must provide a criminal record clearance with vulnerable sector check prior to the start of employment. Standard First Aid and Level “C” CPR training; AED Certificate are considered an asset.

 

Hourly Rate: $27.91 (2023 rate)
